Bees tap team depth for Cache-Box track title

 

LOGAN — With an impressive pile of points in the field events, the Box Elder girls track and field team won the Cache-Box Invitational on Thursday at Utah State’s Maughan Track Stadium.

The Bees tallied 179 points, followed by Mountain Crest with 174.5.

The Box Elder boys used the same formula but ended up second to Sky View., 196 to 172.5. Bear River was sixth in the boys, fifth in the girls meet, which involved six school.

Wendy Johnson won the shot put and discus events on Thursday, finishing fourth behind teammates Harley Earl and Kate Heister in the javelin.

Other Box Elder winners included Kelsey Braithwaite in the 3,200 meters and Mitzi Munns in the high jump. The Bees 400-meter and 800-meter relay teams also won their events.

On the boys side, Box Elder’s Quinn Miles won the discus, while Tyler Anderson won the javelin and Riley Burt won the 200 meters. The Bees also claimed a big number of second- and third-place finishes.

Davis District meet

In the Davis District Championships, staged Tuesday and Wednesday at Syracuse High School, Davis won the boys and girls team titles but several schools boasted top overall performers.

The Davis girls rolled to a 268-point output, followed by Woods Cross (90), Viewmont (86) and Syracuse and Bountiful (55 each).

On the boys side, Davis tallied 212 boys, with host Syracuse a strong second with 91. Bountiful (74) was third, with Clearfield (46) fourth out of eight schools.

Davis’ Sylvia Harrison tied a meet record in the 100-meter hurdles, running in 15.17 seconds. She also won the 200 meters.

The Darts’ Ellie Child won the 800 and 1,600 meters, while Jessica Richardson claimed both the shot put and discus. The Darts had several 1-2-3 efforts.

Other Davis winners included Bailey Carling in the 100 meters, Christine VanBrocklin in the 300-meter hurdles, Chelsey Johnson in the 3,200 meters and Michelle Clark in the javelin. Davis also swept the four relay races.

Syracuse’s Michelle Thurgood won the girls pole vault.

On the boys side, Davis’ Jeff Whitaker won the javelin, Marcus Daley won the long jump, Andrew Aposhian claimed the 3,200 meters, Seth Fortin won the 100 meters, Trevor Leavitt won the 200 meters, and Jackson Sagers won the 1,600 meters.

Syracuse’s Ashton Bigelow won the 300-meter hurdles, while teammate Jaxon Hansen won the 800 meters, Zach Watson won the pole vault, Spencer Hull claimed the shot put and Bradley Sherman won the discus.

Layton’s Marcus Kemp won the high jump, while Davis, Clearfield and Syracuse each posted relay race wins.
