Power pole explosion shuts down I-15 in Riverdale

RIVERDALE — A power pole exploded, leading to a three-car crash and an hour-long closure of Interstate 15.

A power line fell onto the north and southbound lanes of I-15, just north of Riverdale Road, after a power pole exploded on the east side of the freeway at about 12:15 p.m. Sunday, according to a Utah Highway Patrol news release.

This led to a three-car accident, which sent a Clearfield couple and their infant child to McKay-Dee Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, UHP reported.

A Rocky Mountain Power crew came out to remove the line and repair the damage. The explosion initially left about 3,600 customers in the dark, though they had power restored to all but about 780 customers by 5 p.m., according to the company.

The company expected repairs to be complete about 8 p.m. Sunday.

Traffic in both directions was diverted on to alternate routes for about an hour as emergency responders and the power company worked the scene.
