Thai-Lao New Year celebration planned

LAYTON -- The public is invited to a free Songkran Festival, the Thai-Lao New Year celebration, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 14, at Wat Dhammagunaram Buddhist Temple, 644 E. 1000 North, in Layton.

The festivities will include authentic Thai food and music, a Tae Kwondo demonstration, Miss Songkran beauty contest, classical Thai-Lao dance, One Voice children's choir, and a Muay Thai kickbox demonstration.

"We are honored to have Sakasem Kanthawong bring his students (men, women and children) at 3 p.m. to demonstrate Muay Thai kickboxing," states a news release from the temple.

Sakasem is a master Muay Thai instructor. A three-time Muay Thai World Champion with more than 250 professional fights, he has never been knocked out.

With a fighting history that spans 35 years. Sakasem is a well-respected fighter and trainer both in Thailand and in the U.S. Muay Thai kickboxing is a cultural tradition practiced in Thailand for thousands of years.
