LAYTON -- A driver had to be flown to a hospital Thursday morning after his car ran into the back of parked semitrailer on a rain slick section on U.S. 89 in Layton.

The accident happened about 10:15 a.m., near the off-ramp leading to State Road 193, said Lt. Garret Atkin of the Layton police department.

A man who was driving a Nissan Altima heading north went off the road to the right and collided with the semitrailer that had it's flashers on. The man had to be extricated by emergency crews, Atkin said. He sustained injuries that were serious enough to require him to be airlifted to an area hospital, he added.

Two people were in the semitrailer but neither were injured. The names of those involved in the accident haven't been released pending the notification of their families, Atkin said.

There was standing water and slush on the road at the time of the accident and the cause of the crash remains under investigation, Atkin said.

The section of road where the accident happened was restricted to traffic for more than an hour.
