ROY -- A Roy man who says he slapped his infant daughter across her face because she had stopped breathing has been charged with child abuse.
Carl Smith, 38, told investigators that he awoke around 11:30 p.m. April 17 to find that his 1-month-old daughter was not breathing, according to a probable cause affidavit. Smith said he slapped her in the face to try to get her breathing again, then performed CPR on her, the affidavit states.
The Weber County Sheriff's Office was called out to the Big Z Motel in West Haven the following Friday regarding an infant with bruising on her face.
An examiner determined that she had been slapped with considerable force, had a broken tibia and that there were no obvious signs of CPR.
Smith was charged with third-degree felony child abuse and an additional class A misdemeanor charge of child abuse.
