AMERICAN FORK -- An Roy man rock climbing in American Fork Canyon was seriously injured in a fall Tuesday.
The man has been identified as Cameron Larsen, 23, said Utah County Sheriff's Lt. Tom Hodgson. The accident happened about 3 p.m. in Little Mill Canyon on Division Wall.
Larsen is apparently an experienced climber, Hodgson said.
Larsen and three companions had spent a few hours on the north face of Division Wall when Larsen and a female companion decided to hike to his vehicle using a different route. Larsen left the female in a grove of pine trees on a ledge. He told her to stay where she was safe while he looked for a route down the mountain, Hodgson said.
The companion heard rocks falling and saw him tumbling down the mountain. Larsen fell about 75 feet. Hodgson said Larsen may have stepped on some loose rocks and lost his footing.
Bystanders ran to Larsen's aid, and Utah Department of Transportation workers in the area notified authorities.
Larsen was found lying at the bottom of a cliff in some rocks.
Personnel from Lone Peak Fire and Rescue and Utah County Search and Rescue stabilized Larsen and evacuated him off the mountain. He was flown by helicopter to Intermountain Health Care in Murray and is in critical condition, Hodgson said.
