Tooele man arrested in SLC hit-and-run death

SALT LAKE CITY -- Salt Lake City police have arrested a man who they say killed a pedestrian and fled the scene.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports the 21-year-old Tooele man was booked into jail Thursday for hitting and killing 50-year-old Eugene Nelson in the downtown area shortly after midnight.

Authorities say a woman who was on a date with the man reported the accident to police.

Authorities say the driver had apparently been drinking vodka before attending the Utah Jazz basketball game. The woman also said the driver had about a half-dozen beers during the game.

Witnesses tell police the driver stopped and got out of the vehicle, but then got in again and drove off.
