Christian women invited to May Friendship Day

Apr 27 2012 - 5:32pm

Women from area Christian churches are invited to participate locally with Church Women United in a May Friendship Day.

Two celebrations will be held.

On Friday, women in the Salt Lake City chapter of Church Women United will meet from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 1915 S. Orchard Drive, in Bountiful.

On May 12, the Ogden chapter will meet at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1339 W. 400 North, in Marriott-Slaterville.

"Listening to My Sisters" is the theme of this year's event.

"It's all the Christian churches," said Barbara Stone, a former executive officer with the Salt Lake City unit of Church Women United. "It's just an opportunity to be together in fellowship. It's a great thing to be involved with."

"The goal of this May Friendship Day program is to help each CWU unit recognize the diversity the women bring to their community," states a group newsletter on the event.

"Let's listen to our sisters as we tell our stories and the stories of our ancestors that led them to dream, to plan and to move. Most of us are here because our ancestors were looking for a promised land. We are part of the heritage of welcoming the stranger."

The newsletter states that Church Women United is a racially, culturally, theologically inclusive Christian women's movement.

"Celebrate the unity we have in the midst of our diversity as we work together for a world of peace and justice," it states.

"As always, the Fellowship of the Least Coin is an important part of the celebration, and taking time to reflect on our sisters around the world gives a sense of how we are all connected."

Women wishing to participate in either celebration are encouraged to arrive a half-hour early for registration.

The Bountiful service will be followed by a luncheon. Registration is $1 and lunch is $4 there.

The event will include a presentation from the Esther Williams Scholarship fund.

To RSVP, call Stone at 801-262-1109 or Phyllis Allen at 801-298-7197.

At the Marriott-Slaterville event, registration will be $3, and participants are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item for SHARE and a Least Coin offering. Light refreshments will follow.
