Roy tops Bonneville in Region 5 play; Logan awaits

ROY — The Royals picked off one co-Region 5 boys soccer leader Friday afternoon.

Another awaits on the horizon.

Roy High defeated rival Bonneville 2-1 at Sand Ridge Park in a well-played, physical battle that wasn’t decided until the final seconds.

Bonneville, Roy and Logan Crest began the day tied for the league lead at 4-1-0. The Grizzlies topped Box Elder 1-0 in overtime with a late goal.

Logan hosts Roy on Tuesday for the outright lead.

Michael Ropelato drilled a free kick with three minutes to play for the Royals.

“We played well in the first half, but lost our shape a bit in the second half,” Roy coach Glenn Puckrin said. “It was good game, very physical, and Bonneville is a quick team. Gage Woodward is a talented player we have to keep an eye on at all times.”

Ropelato assisted on Damien Dibble’s goal in the first half. But the Lakers’ Woodward tied things up with a goal after the break.

Puckrin said the Royals’ midfield play was strong throughout, led by Brock Charlesworth, Giovanni Vasquez and Blake Toyn. Keeper Kaden Brinkerhoff made several big saves.

At Brigham City, the Bees made a strong push to upset the league leaders, but a golden goal in the second overtime period by Kayd Marquez kept the Grizzlies at 5-1-0 and sent the Box Elder crowd home disappointed.

In the other Region 5 contest, Jesse Montufar scored a pair and Mountain Crest broke things open with four after halftime in a 5-1 rout of Sky View.

The Jayhawks finish as region co-champions and will use a coin flip to determine tournament seeding.

Keanyu Tate, Connor Letendre, and Buster Voinovich each added scores.

Voinoch’s PK goal was the first of his career, making for a memorable moment on senior day.

“We feel like the top four teams in the region could be in the 2-A semifinals,” St. Joseph coach Derek Tate said. “It was a good way to finish the regular season.

Mitch Kohler recorded the shutout for the Jayhawks.

• HIGHLAND 4, CLEARFIELD 3 (OT): At Clearfield, the Falcons suffered a heart-breaking loss in the super-competitive Region 6.
