LAYTON -- A woman and her two dogs escaped their home before fire destroyed it at 1 p.m. Friday.

A Layton police officer responding to the call knocked on the front door of the home at 290 W. Meadow Brooke Court. When there was no answer he went inside and located the occupant, who fled the home with her dogs, said Doug Bitton, public information officer for the Layton Fire Department.

The woman was downstairs watching television and was unaware of the fire that had started outside the home near a shed.

By the time Layton fire crews and arrived, the fire had spread to the attic and roof of the home, causing significant damage, Bitton said.
