SALT LAKE CITY -- Health officials are warning Utah residents to slather on the sunscreen and seek shade as summer nears to avoid potentially deadly skin cancer.
The Utah Department of Health says more than 600 state residents are expected to develop skin cancer this year. Utah has the second highest rate of melanoma in the country.
The department says Utahns can reduce their risk by avoiding overexposure to the sun and by steering clear of indoor tanning beds.
Officials also plan to spread the word about skin cancer through an ad campaign in movie theaters, and with the help Real Salt Lake soccer player Chris Wingert.
