Prep tennis: Darts close in on Region 1 crown

OGDEN -- With the state 5-A tennis tournament just a couple of weeks away, the Region 1 boys championships began under balmy conditisions Monday at at Ogden High School and Mount Ogden Park's courts.

Defending champion Davis put all five entries for today's finals, and will meet Weber in four of the championship matches.

It the weather allows the matches to be played, Davis' Spencer Hafen will be playing for his second No. 1 singles title, but his first since 2009.

The past two seasons, Hafen and Viewmont's Jared Hintze met in memorable finals with Hintze picking up the title trophy.

This year, Hafen will meet Weber's Colton McBride for the title.

The Darts, as a team, have been virtually unstoppable in dual matches, with Bryson Wilkes (No. 2 singles), CJ Ercanbrack and Cooper Brown (No. 1 doubles), and Garrett Wilkes and Justin Schofield (No. 2 doubles) in today's finals. The top four teams at each classification will advance to the state 5-A tournament, set for May 11-12 at Salt Lake City's Liberty Park courts.

The Region 5, 6 and 11 tournaments will be staged next week. The state 2-A/1-A tournanament is set for May 12 at BYU. The 3-A (BYU) and 4-A (Liberty Park) tournaments will follow on May 18-19.
