Prep softball: Bear River cruises to region title

GARLAND -- The Bears captured their third straight Region 11 title Wednesday, blanking Ben Lomond 17-0 in a three-inning whitewash.

In sweeping the season series, four-time defending state 3-A champion Bear River outscored the winless Scots 36-zip.

Senior right-hander Rebekah Wheatley tossed a two-hitter with four strikeouts, no walks and one hit batter.

Jordan Theurer went 3-for-3 with five RBIs and scored three runs. Shaunie Owen was 2-for-2 with a walk, two doubles, an RBI and three runs; Tyree Haramoto went 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs; and Kassi Fronk walked three times with three runs for the Bears (20-3 overall, 11-1 league), who extended their winning streak to eight.

Utah Valley University signee Morgan Summers was 1-for-1 with two walks, six stolen bases and three runs. She broke three listed state records for stolen bases on Wednesday: game (six); season (45); and career (98).

The Scots are 0-18, 0-11.

* STANSBURY 13, MORGAN 0 (FIVE INNINGS): At Stansbury Park, the Stallions (18-6, 7-4) pounded out 10 extra-base hits in stampeding the Trojans (3-19, 2-9), who had only one hit.

In another game, Grantsville topped Tooele; no score was reported.

Non-league

* SPANISH FORK 9, BONNEVILLE 4: At Spanish Fork Sports Park, the defending 4-A champion Dons (20-2) -- now a 3-A school competing in Region 12 -- won their 16th consecutive game and smacked two home runs among their 11 hits.

McKinlee Westmoreland had a sacrifice fly for the two-time defending Region 5 champion Lakers (10-7), who scored four seventh-inning runs, including a bases-loaded walk.
