SALT LAKE CITY -- The family of a Sevier County sheriff's sergeant who was killed in a 2010 crash on an icy bridge is suing Utah's Department of Transportation and the other drivers involved.
Sgt. Franco Aguilar was investigating a single-car crash on Interstate 70 on April 29, 2010, when officials say a speeding car crashed into him and the stopped vehicle.
The lawsuit filed this week in 3rd District Court says Aguilar was "catapulted" over the side of the Fish Creek Bridge and fell to his death.
The wrongful death lawsuit claims UDOT failed to properly maintain the bridge, and claims negligence on the part of the car drivers and owners.
UDOT spokesman Nate McDonald tells The Salt Lake Tribune the agency has turned the lawsuit over to insurance to consider possible action.
