Man pleads guilty to extorting BYU student for sex

SALT LAKE CITY -- A 36-year-old Orem man is pleading guilty to extorting sexual favors and money from an engaged, male Brigham Young University student he met on Craigslist.

KSL reports Brad Ray Adams pleaded guilty Thursday to theft by extortion and attempted theft by extortion, both class B misdemeanors. Adams was sentenced to 15 days in jail.

Charges of forcible sodomy and voyeurism are being dropped in exchange for the plea.

Provo police say a 21-year-old man sent Adams a sexually suggestive photo earlier this year after they met through Craigslist. Adams also videotaped a sexual encounter between the two men.

When the man subsequently tried to cut-off contact, Adams threatened to send the picture to BYU officials and his fianci unless the student paid him money or offered more sex.
