Ode to the commencement of graduation

It's time for graduation now,

Of tributes and attention.

But amidst all the excitement

Is a growing apprehension.

From the first day of your classes

Until your graduation

Your life's been planned out for you

As you've sought your education.

In a Monday-Wednesday-Friday,

Or Tuesday-Thursday block

You've known each hour where you would be

(With one eye on the clock).

Your life's belonged to learning

In this broadening of your knowing.

Your weeks and days and hours

Have been filled to overflowing.

You've either been in classrooms

Or studying in a lab

Or buried in the library

Researching something drab.

You've read what you were told to read,

You've been where you should be.

You've been a scholar/soldier

On your march to liberty.

But now in robes and caps you march

And sit with learned friend,

And while the speakers speechify

You long for this to end.

You whole life is before you,

Or so the speakers say,

This day's "Your new beginning!"

You're finally on your way.

You're now a total summary

Of all your years at college.

You now know almost everything.

You're filled right up with knowledge.

But yet, you're still just sitting here.

You're still at their command.

You're getting very tired of this.

You want to take a stand.

You want to shout, "I will go forth!

I'll prosper and achieve!

I'll know all, do all, be all --

But you've got to let me leave!"

"I know I have the answers

To every single woe.

I'll make a global difference

But you've got to let me go!"

I understand the bigger plan

It really does make sense.

I'll change the whole wide world

If you'll just let me Commence!"

You finally hold diplomas

You finally stand and cheer

You finally head into the light

You're finally out of here.

And finally it hits you,

Your structured days are done.

You make the choices all alone;

The guidance is all gone.

So you march forth all self assured,

Determined and so steady,

But deep inside you're scared to death

And wonder ... Am I ready?
