DA wants son tried as adult for shooting ICE agent dad

LOS ANGELES -- The 14-year-old son of an ICE agent was charged Friday with murdering his father, and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office says prosecutors now will push to have the juvenile tried as an adult.

The teen, who has not been identified by authorities, is due in Compton Juvenile Court on Monday for arraignment, Deputy District Attorney Todd Hicks said in a statement. The youth also faces an allegation that he used a firearm to kill his father, the district attorney's office said.

Authorities allege that the 14-year-old fatally shot his father, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Myron W. Chisem, striking him once in the head Wednesday as the 42-year-old sat in the family room watching TV. Police said the shot was fired from the backyard of the family's home in Carson, Calif.

The son called 911, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials said, and deputies found Chisem's ICE-issued handgun in the front yard.

District attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said it was not yet clear whether prosecutors would seek first-degree murder charges or some lesser count. She noted that with the added firearm allegation, the teen would face a lengthy sentence if convicted of murder as an adult.

The teen is believed to have been angry at the time of the shooting after being disciplined for misbehaving, according to law enforcement sources.

Investigators are continuing to examine the events leading to the shooting. District attorney officials said the teen is in custody but were unclear on his exact location.

A memorial service for the agent likely will be scheduled for next week, a family friend said.
