Box Elder, other counties sue BLM over road dispute

SALT LAKE CITY -- State officials say Box Elder and nine other Utah counties have sued the federal government over title to thousands of miles of roads that cross public land in the state, and 12 more counties are expected to follow suit next week.

Utah Chief Deputy Attorney General John Swallow says the state will be listed as a plaintiff in the lawsuits filed by 22 of Utah's 29 counties against the Interior Department and Bureau of Land Management.

The Deseret News reports Beaver, Box Elder, Carbon, Duchesne, Emery, Piute, Rich, Sanpete, Utah and Wayne counties had filed separate lawsuits in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City as of Friday night.

Swallow says he expects the remaining 12 counties to file suits Monday and Tuesday.

Environmental groups have sharply criticized the complaints.
