Girls golf: Lakers run away with Region 5 title

PLEASANT VIEW -- With Lea leading the way, the Lakers had it on cruise control.

Bonneville High's girls golf team captured the Region 5 championship with an 18 stroke win over the field on Tuesday at The Barn Golf Club.

Lea Garner, the Lakers' BYU-senior leader shot a 1-over-par 73 to earn her fourth region titleist honor in as many years.

"I had some rough spots today, but I really was able to keep it consistent," Garner said. "It's been a fun year, but but it's gone by way quick."

Box Elder's McCall Uyematsu kept the pressure on Garner throughout the 18-hole round, finishing with a 76. She helped the Bees finish second overall, followed by Mountain Crest, Sky View, Logan and Roy.

The top four teams advance to next week's state 4-A tournament at Wasatch Mountain State Park.

Garner had plenty of help in the team chase, with Jamie Garner adding and 85 for third place overall. Emily Chadwick fourth at 88, along with Logan's Kathy Miller and Janice Kim. Bonneville's Tallie Alder shot 91.

I'm so proud of th team and what they've done," Garner said. "I think if can keep playing well, we can been in it at state."

Region 17

* ST. JOSEPH GIRLS, LAYTON CHRISTIAN BOYS WIN: At Wolf Creek Resort in Eden, the St. Joseph girls repeated as region champions but the St. Joseph boys fell by 11 shots to Layton Christian in the team chase.

"LCA had a darn good day and they've been a great challenge for us all year," St. Joseph coach Lou Eddy said.

The Eagles finished with a team score of 333, with St. Joseph at 344. LCA's Austin Geddings was the region medalist with a 77 at Wolf Creek, a shot ahead of St. Joseph's Jared Kenny. LCA Layton Christian's Jaece Stokes (80) was third, followed by St. Joseph's Buster Voinovich (86) and LCA's Jason Haugen (87).

On the girls side, the Jayhawks remained undefeated with a 182 score in the modified stableford system. LCA was second at 112.

In the medalist chase, Greta Schneider and Alexandria Shinaut finished 1-2 in the stableford with 69 and 68 points, respectively. In gross scores, Shinaut topped Schneider 95-96.

LCA's Anna Ruzkova was third at 54, with St. Joseph's Madi White (45) and Sara Williams (41) rounding out the top five.
