Hatch, Liljenquist to debate once before primary

May 8 2012 - 5:46pm

SALT LAKE CITY -- U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch is agreeing to one debate with his primary challenger before Republican voters decide his fate.

Hatch will debate Dan Liljenquist, of Bountiful, on The Doug Wright Show on KSL Radio sometime next month. The show airs weekday mornings.

Hatch says he will forego additional debates in favor of town hall meetings, despite a strong push from Liljenquist for more debates around the state.

Voters who are registered Republicans will cast their ballots in the primary race June 26. The two candidates were forced to a primary as the top two vote-getters in last month's state convention.

The winner of the Republican primary will face Democratic nominee Scott Howell, who lost to Hatch in 2000. Utah has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1970.
