12th whooping cough case confirmed in Cache County

LOGAN -- Health officials say they've confirmed the 12th case of whooping cough in a Cache County outbreak that started earlier this spring.

Bear River Health Department officials say the latest case was identified Tuesday at Summit Elementary in Smithfield.

Principal Mark Daines tells The Herald Journal (http://bit.ly/KcFaYb) the school has sent warning letters home to parents, but says he isn't too worried about the cough spreading because the child has been kept out of school for the past week and a half.

Other cases were reported last month at North Park Elementary in North Logan and at Cedar Ridge Middle School in Hyde Park.

Health officials say people should make sure their vaccines are current and should wash their hands regularly.
