ODGEN -- A best-selling author and journalist, a physician who was an alcoholic and a survivor of a dangerous autoimmune disease are just a few of the highlights at the Ogden Surgical Medical Society's 67th annual conference.
The conference is being held Wednesday through Friday at the Eccles Conference Center. The public is invited to attend.
The theme this year is "Dermatology in Primary & Specialty Medicine." Topics include deadly rashes, melanoma, psoriasis, celiac disease and the skin.
This year's keynote speaker is T.R. Reid, a New York Times bestselling author of "The Healing of America: A Global Quest for Better, Cheaper, and Fairer Healthcare."
Reid, a former journalist with the Washington Post, will share evidence from doctors, government officials, health care experts and patients from all over the world showing that foreign health care systems give everybody quality care at an affordable cost.
"Over the years, the society has invited nationally renowned speakers to come to Ogden for the annual meeting," said Teresa Puskedra, executive director of the Ogden Surgical Medical Society. "This year is no exception."
Philadelphia physician Mary DeJoseph will speak about fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. DeJoseph knows first-hand about the disease because she was an alcoholic and had three children who suffered from FASD.
Dr. Timothy Houden will give a lecture titled "Don't Lose Your License, Don't Go to Jail, Don't Kill Your Patient -- Pitfalls of Pain Pill Prescribing."
Other topics include cochlear implants; protecting the kidney in people with Type 2 diabetes; what you need to know about vaccinations when traveling; and children with chronic skin conditions.
The conference is the longest-running medical conference west of the Mississippi, said Puskedra, and each year it grows. Last year, 100 more people attended the conference than the year before.
The lectures are open and free to the public. There will be a fee for breakfast and lunch. Healthcare workers will also be charged to attend the conference.
The conference begins each day at 7:30 a.m. For a list of lectures and times, go to www.ogdensurgical.com.
Registration is available at the website, or by calling Puskedra at 801-564-5585.
