Prep football: Ben Lomond hires new coach

Bill Mierzejewski isn't done coaching or teaching.

Ben Lomond High School principal Ben Smith announced last week that Mierzejewski has been named the school's new football coach.

"He will be great. Bill will offer some stability for our program," Smith said.

Smith knows Mierzejewski well. He played basketball for him many years ago back in Greybull, Wyo.

After nearly 30 years coaching and teaching high school overseas, Mierzejewski recently retired and moved back to Wyoming.

"But we decided we weren't done," the new coach said. "And Ben Lomond picked us."

After meeting with the football team last week, Mierzejewski came away with a great first impression.

"I had done my research. I knew Ben Lomond had gone 14-65 in the last 10 years," he said. "But I was impressed with the students. The kids are respectful; willing to be led. I hope to spend time in their living rooms. I will be involved in their academic lives. I consider myself a teacher more than a coach."

Mierzejewski, who will teach PC and health at Ben Lomond, coach for 24 years in Okinawa.

"I am excited," the 64-year-old said. "Don't look at me as old, but look as me as experienced."

Munns headed to Dixie State

Dixie State women's basketball coach Angela Kristensen recently announced two more additions for the 2012-13 season. Shannon Gough signed a letter of intent to attend DSC and Mandy Munns returns to her home state after transferring from Boise State.

Gough is a 5-foot-7 point guard from Reno, Nev.

Munns, a 6-3-inch post player from Brigham City, comes to Dixie State with one year of eligibility left after playing at the University of Utah and Boise State.

Wrestling stalling penalty increased

High school wrestlers who are called for a third stalling violation will receive a stiffer penalty beginning with the 2012-13 season. In addition to the two-point penalty assessed for a third stalling violation, the opponent will now have his or her choice of position on the next restart.

The stalling penalty revision was one of eight rules changes approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations Wrestling rules committee at its April 9-11 meeting. For more information, visit the NFHS Web site at www.nfhs.org.
