SALT LAKE CITY -- A 23-year-old South Salt Lake man has pleaded guilty to killing his mother after she asked him to make her a cup of coffee.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports John Paul White pleaded guilty Monday to first-degree murder in the November 2010 death of 62-year-old Mary White.
He faces up to life in prison at sentencing July 30.
John White's defense attorney, Charles Corry, said his client pleaded guilty because he wanted to accept responsibility.
Police said John White snapped after the coffee request, and tried to strangle his mother with an iPod cord. When the cord broke, he stabbed her several times before slashing her throat.
Authorities say he cleaned up the blood and tried to commit suicide with a mix of carpet cleaner and his mother's medications.
