Coroner IDs 3-year-old swept away in Virgin River

MESQUITE, Nev. -- Authorities are identifying a 3-year-old girl who died after she was swept into the Virgin River while playing on the shore.

The Clark County coroner says Sherlyn Martinez-Alvarez of Mesquite died after she was sucked into an irrigation ditch at about 12:40 p.m. on Tuesday.

Two other children playing alongside the river were also endangered, but their grandmother was able to pull them out of the water.

The child went into the water near the Riverside Road bridge that connects Mesquite to Bunkerville. That's about 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

Roughly 50 rescuers searched for hours hoping to save her.
