Garner leads Lakers to repeat

MIDWAY — Bonneville High repeated as state 4-A girls golf champion in 2012, turning back Region 5 rival Box Elder by seven points in action at Wasatch Mountain State Park.

But Wednesday’s final round was especially satisfying for Lea Garner, who finally captured the medalist title that had eluded her in years past.

“It was really cool to win again, a great way to end my high school career,” Garner said after posting a 1-over-par 73, good enough for 89 points on the stableford charts. “Everyone stepped up and played their game.

“I want to win medalist, but I figured whatever happens, happens. Then my dad told me I had won.”

Coach Blair Garner, dad to Lea, was proud of Lea’s steady play.

“We’re so proud of all the girls. Jamie Garner (no relation) and Kenzi Kendell played really on the front nine. Then they all held it together on the back nine,” coach Garner said. “Box Elder has been so good all year, and McCall (Uymatsu) had a good round early.

“The individual title has eluded Lea for three years. He 73 was the low round of both the 5-A and 4-A tournament It was great for the girls to be rewarded for all their hard work.”

Lea Garner, headed to BYU on a golf scholarship, was 1-under par at the turn, and 2-under par with four holes to play. Garner — who finished seventh individually as a freshman, fourth as a sophomore and second a year ago — closed things out by going bogey, birdie, bogey, bogey.”

“It’s been great to have my dad as my coach,” Lea said. “He’s been a great support since I started playing with him when I was 5 years old. But it’s even better to have him as a dad.”

Box Elder was second, 241 to 234 points, with Orem third at 219.

Uyematsu and Orem’s Kim Nyhus tied for second at 86 points, with Timpanogos’ Monica Yeates fourth at 85.

Jamie Garner (78) finished fifth, with Box Elder’s Mallory Marx (76) fifth. Kendell, Logan’s Kathleen Miller and Bountiful’s Carl Anderson (74) tied for seventh.

Box Elder’s Andrea Walker (72) just finished out of the top 10, tied with Roy’s Haley Case.

The other members of the Bonneville team included Tallie Alder (68), Annalee Chadwick (67) and Annika Hunter (64).
