S. Utah teacher sentenced for sex abuse

ST. GEORGE  -- A former southern Utah high school teacher faces up to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually abusing four girls.

The Spectrum reports Washington City resident John Robert James Cody was sentenced Tuesday to 1 to 15 years in prison on each of four counts, although Utah law doesn't allow someone to be imprisoned for more than 30 years unless they have a life sentence.

The 42-year-old Cody pleaded guilty in January to inappropriately touching three girls in swimming pool incidents in 2008 and 2009.

He also pleaded guilty to sexually touching a young relative.

Cody taught at Pine View High School at the time, though his students were not the victims.

He said Tuesday that he's genuinely sorry and takes full responsibility for his actions.
