OGDEN -- The Outlaws are hoping seven is their lucky number.
The Ogden Outlaws, who compete in the United Soccer League's Premier Development League, begin their seventh season of competition this weekend, and owner/head coach Mike Hickman Sr. feels like this is his most talented squad yet.
"I am actually really excited and nervous at the same time," Hickman said. "I really expect to finish this year with a winning record. We have returned the best players from last year, an added some extremely talented players from all over.
"This team has quality from front-to-back," Hickman added. "I feel we have the most talent of any year to date."
Ogden put the finishing touches on its preseason training with a friendly match against Utah United on Saturday, blistering their in-state rivals 8-2, in final preparation for this weekend's season-opening road trip to southern California.
The Outlaws open up their season against the Ventura County Fusion (0-1-1) at 8 p.m. tonight at Ventura College, before traveling to Irvine, Calif., to face the Orange County Blue Star (0-0-3) at 6 p.m. Sunday.
"We are creating and scoring in practice and our exhibition games, I just hope that we will mesh together as a group soon," Hickman said. "I like that we have an experience mixture of returners and young guys. We have our leading scorer (Chance Bukoski) back.
"We pretty much have a new defense, but all have experience at high levels."
Hickman hopes for the Outlaws to attack more this year, even bringing back veteran Kyle Christensen to give his offense a seasoned attacker.
Christensen, who led Layton High School to the 2003 state 5-A title, was drafted into Major League Soccer after his graduation from Denver University, but narrowly missed making a primary roster during the few seasons before the reserve league was disbanded.
"We are probably going with a 4-4-1-1 formation," Hickman said. "We are going to press higher and keep the pressure in our attacking half.
"Our mantra will be attack, attack, attack. I think our games will be a lot of fun to watch.
"Look for newcomer Jordan Roylance, and Chance and Elias Hatungimana to score goals for us. On defense, look for Alejando Montanez, Matt Kuehl, Renan Frenandez and Ethan Summers to be key."
Ogden's 2012 home opener will be June 24 against the Fresno Fuego at Bonneville High School.
