SALT LAKE CITY -- A man is in jail after Salt Lake City police say they caught him cutting down 40-foot-tall aluminum light poles in an apparent effort to get quick cash.
Jail records show 32-year-old Jason Rick Winkler is being held in the Salt Lake County jail Thursday on suspicion of theft and possessing drug paraphernalia.
Police say witnesses saw Winkler cutting the poles Tuesday afternoon. Officers who responded say they found Winkler and another woman with a power saw, and three nearby poles were found chopped down to their bases.
Authorities tell KSL Winkler was planning to sell the poles to a recycler. Officials say the poles cost about $2,000 each, but are worth about $100 apiece as scrap.
