SALT LAKE CITY -- Snowbird Ski & Summer Resort has approval to build a mountainside roller coaster.
The Salt Lake County Planning Commission voted Wednesday to issue key waivers that allow construction on slopes steeper than 30 degrees and within 100 feet of a stream. Planners also issued a conditional-use permit for the coaster's operation.
Snowbird says it still needs to work with planners on technical details. It hopes to build the 3,100-foot coaster for Octoterfest or by next spring. The resort is busying replacing the Little Cloud chair lift this summer.
Snowbird will build the coaster on the resort side of the canyon stream, unlike an earlier proposal that would have put it on the north side of Little Cottonwood Canyon.
