Tree-climbing competition in Layton today

LAYTON — Starting today, tree climbers will compete at the Utah Community Forest Council/International Society of Arboriculture-Utah Chapter’s 18th Annual Tree Climbing Championship at Layton Commons Park, 437 N. Wasatch Drive.

Today and Saturday, competitors will perform five climbs — work climb, aerial rescue, belayed speed climb, secured foot lock and throw line. Each one tests how well the climbers can quickly, expertly and safely move about a tree while performing specific tasks.

The three competitors with the highest scores will compete in the Masters Challenge on Saturday afternoon. The winner from that event will be crowned state champion and represent Utah at the 2011 International Tree Climb Competition in August.
