As a native Utahn, brought up in the local church, and being painfully aware of the prejudice that outsiders seem happy to heap on us, I was happy to see a video of Mitt Romney, a Mormon running for president, shaking hands with well-placed Republican restaurant patrons who had big smiles on their faces despite the idea that they are obviously older, white, mid-west evangelicals.
I felt good because I was thinking that this might be a breakthrough concerning outside attitudes about my local culture and we may even see fewer out-of-state evangelical nut-jobs screaming at temple goers in Salt Lake.
I was relishing that feeling, when, viewing a similar video, I could swear I saw a man, after shaking Mitt's hand, lean over to his wife and say, "Mildred, he doesn't have horns!" His wife shook her head and said, "No, like Hellboy he just grinds them down every night."
Oh well, we'll just have to keep trying to show the world that we are almost normal out here in Utah. Almost.
