SALT LAKE CITY -- The Bonneville High boys tennis team took another step in the right direction on the state scene.
Unfortunately, the Lakers -- and the rest of the 4-A ranks for that matter, ran into a record-setting Timpview team.
The Thunderbirds won all five brackets on Saturday at Salt Lake City's Liberty Park, a first in 4-A tennis. Bonneville finished third, just a point behind East for second place.
Juniors Parker Jones and Jay Walter and sophomore Tyler Heaton advanced farther than they did in 2011, but couldn't crack the Timpview stranglehold.
Walter defeated Mountain Crest's Mitchell John in the No. 2 singles semifinals, 6-0, 6-1, but fell to Timpview's Matthew Pearce in the final, 6-4, 6-2.
At No. 1 singles, Jones fell to Hillcrest's Michael Mann, 6-1, 7-5. Mann lost to Timpview's Jon Pearce in the championship match.
At No. 3 singles, Heaton lost a tough semifinal to East's Steiner Paulson, 6-3, 6-1. Paulson fell to Timpview's Paul Monson in the final.
Logan's Hunter Ballam and Jordan Larsen advanced to the No. 1 doubles final before falling. The Grizzlies finished fourth in the team title chase.
At Provo, Ogden High's Blake Newman advanced to the finals of the state 3-A tennis tournament Saturday with an exciting 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Judge Memorial's John Barnett at No. 3 singles.
But Newman fell to Park City's Matt Groy, 6-2, 7-5 in the finals, played at BYU's courts. The win propelled the Miners to the team title, two points ahead of Dixie and Desert Hills.
Ogden finished sixth overall.
