Riverton rallies around teen paralyzed in mishap

RIVERTON — A Utah community is rallying behind a 14-year-old girl who was paralyzed in a freak accident last year.

Riverton police on Friday presented Kendra Muller with a bathroom specially designed to accommodate her wheelchair.

The Riverton Precinct of the Unified Police Department raised more than $15,000 for the project, with the help of local schoolchildren and businesses.

"It’s fun to be part of trying to make a difference," Rod Norton, precinct chief, said.

Kendra was paralyzed in May 2011 when she piled into a hammock with four friends during a pool party and a brick support column crumbled on top of her. She broke her spine, ribs, neck, collarbone and shoulder blades.

She spent the summer at Primary Children’s Medical Center, and her condition improved. She still has the use of her arms, and goes to therapy two times a week.

She said the biggest help the new bathroom will provide is an open shower.

"Before there was a big lip so I couldn’t roll my wheelchair in and take a shower," she said. "I couldn’t be independent in doing a normal thing that everybody needs to do."

Kendra will now be able to reach the sink without bumping her legs and wheelchair against a cabinet under the sink.

Police detective Ed Malm praised Kendra’s positive outlook.

"To see how she’s been able to overcome adversity, just with life and things that she has ahead of her, it’s just inspiring," he said.

Kendra described her mental outlook: "Not to take what you have for granted because it can all change. Some people always have it worse off than you. So really not to complain."
