Free guided summer tours of Utah historic places offered

SALT LAKE CITY - Starting June 1, Utah Heritage Foundation docents will guide summer tours of four historic sites in Salt Lake City.

The Utah Theatre, Kearns Mansion (Governor's residence), Salt Lake City and County Building, and Meditation Chapel in Memory Grove Park will welcome visitors during the summer months. All tours are free.

Utah Heritage Foundation docents will provide interesting historical and factual information during guided tours of these iconic Utah places. Additional self-guided historic tours in Salt Lake City may be downloaded from Utah Heritage Foundation's website: www.utahheritagefoundation.org.

For the first time, monthly tours of the historic Utah Theatre will be included in the Foundation's summer guided tour program. The Utah Theater opened in 1920 at an estimated cost of $2,250,000. The auditorium of the theater was built in the center of the block. Access to the theater from Main Street is provided by a long hallway. The original building was built in 1872 or earlier, and has been used by the Masons, Auerbach Brother's Department Store, Shipler Photo, Cox Brothers Billiards, and Shapers Travel Goods. It originally had a third story, but it was removed in about 1937. The theatre has been closed for more than two decades and is now owed by the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City.Utah.
