WEST JORDAN -- They came in with a little bit of swagger and left with even more confidence.
The Syracuse Titans pounded out big hit after big hit and Jason Jourdan threw it even better as the Titans rolled to an easy 7-1 victory over former region rival Viewmont Monday afternoon in the one-loss bracket of the state 5-A baseball tournament at SLCC's Cate Field.
"The kids are playing with a lot of confidence right now," Syracuse coach Jeff Bearnson said. "Jason threw it well and got out of a couple of jams early and we never lost confidence or came close to getting rattled. When we had that big sixth inning, everyone contributed and got to the plate. Now we live to play another day."
Syracuse (17-9 overall) got on the board in the third inning on an RBI from Jayden Bearnson up the middle to score Bryce Vanotti for the 1-0 lead. Viewmont was able to tie the game on a Tanner Gamble RBI single in the fifth inning, before the Titans decided to send the house to the plate.
Hayden Udy and Braden Roberts started the inning with singles. Jordan Pobanz hit into a fielder's choice and left runners on the corners with one out. After a Brandon Hammond walk, Rieley Gibson dropped a single into left field that scored two runs and started to blow the game open. Vanotti drew a walk and Kaden King loaded the bases with a two out walk as well. Bearnson then smashed a two-run single up the middle for the 6-1 lead.
The Titans rounded out the scoring in the top of the seventh with an RBI squeeze play from Hammond that scored Roberts from third.
Bearnson finished with two hits and three RBIs while Gibson had a hit and two RBIs.
Jourdan gave up just seven hits over six innings with four strikeouts and Spencer Johnson came on in relief and got the final three outs to end the game. The Titans will face Riverton, who defeated the Davis Darts in the late game, at 11 a.m. today at Kearns High.
"I'm so proud of what these kids have done over the past week, but they have some confidence going forward and we'll come out ready to play tomorrow," Bearnson added.
SBlt RIVERTON 5, DAVIS 2: At Cate Field in West Jordan, the Silver Wolves did just enough to get by the Darts in the late game of the consolation bracket.
Zac Fuller took the loss for Davis on the mound. The Darts finish the season with a 20-5 record.
