Wildcats charge into NCAA track regionals

Nine Weber State athletes have qualified for the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship West Regional.

The ultimate goal of getting to Des Moines, Iowa, for the finals, begins today through Saturday at the University of Texas at Austin.

Women who will compete this week include Sarah Callister, Taylor Thornley and Kayla Blackford in the 10,000 meters, and Amber Henry and Laken Hintze in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Wildcat men who will compete include Mike Hardy and Trevor Ricks in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Tyler McBee in the hurdles and hammer thrower Zach Parry.

The Wildcats will be joined by 47 BYU athletes, eight Utah women's competitors, eight Utah State runners, seven Southern Utah performers and four from Utah Valley University.

Callister currently has the sixth-best 10,000-meter time (32.51.17) in the field. Henry boasts the fourth best 3,000-meter steeplechase time (9:53.94) in the naion.

Qualifying is the first two days, along with some distance races.

* BYU: The Cougars will send 47 competitors to the meet, including 27 men and 16 women. Among the performers are Chris Carter (Roy), Josh Adams (Davis), Jared Ward (Davis), Justin Hedin (Mountain Crest), Candace Eddy (Davis), Ada Robinson (Viewmont) and Sarah Edwards (Woods Cross).

* UTAH: Eight members of the Utah track and field team will compete in the preliminary meet. Among the entries are Rosalie Griffin (Bountiful), Stephanie Jolley (Viewmont) and Andrea Chavez (St. Joseph).

* UTAH STATE: Among the eight Aggies set to compete are Lindsey Spencer (Fremont), Bryce Hall (Davis) and Bailee Whitworth (Viewmont).

* SUU/UVU: Among the seven Southern Utah athletes include Chris Johnson (Box Elder). Utah Valley will send fourth athletes, headed by Shelise Walker (Weber).
