1 killed in fiery overnight crash in Murray

MURRAY -- The Utah Highway Patrol is investigating a fiery, early-morning crash that left one person dead on Interstate 215 in Murray.

Troopers say they're not sure whether the driver was a man or a woman, but they tell The Salt Lake Tribune the vehicle was registered to a woman in Rock Springs, Wyo.

Authorities say the car was traveling eastbound on I-215 near 100 West when it veered into the median. The car traveled between the barriers dividing the travel lanes until it crashed into a concrete pillar supporting TRAX commuter train rails.

The vehicle burst into flames. UHP Trooper Lawrence Hopper tells the Tribune passersby tried to rescue the driver, but were turned back by intense heat.

It's unclear whether the driver died on impact or because of the fire.
