SALT LAKE CITY -- Prison authorities say an inmate charged with killing a guard is so dangerous they can't accommodate a mental evaluation for the man.
The state argues that Curtis Allgier would have to be shackled by the hands and feet, chained to a wall and separated from a psychologist by a set of bars.
Allgier's lawyers say he needs contact with the psychologist for a battery of tests that could make a case against execution if Allgier is found guilty by a jury.
Third District Court Judge Paul Maughan told lawyers Wednesday to work on a compromise before asking for a court ruling.
Allgier has pleaded not guilty to the 2007 killing of Steven Anderson with his own gun during a medical visit outside Utah State Prison.
He's due back in court Aug. 29.
