When feature reporter Becky Wright went out to the Historic 25th Street car show last week, she brought along her two nephews, ages 4 and 10. She gave them a camera and asked them to shoot photos of the cars they considered cool.
She then posted the photos in the Out & About section of our GO! website. It was a cute way of seeing the car show through the eyes of a couple of young boys.
Part blog, part column, part news story, Out & About is one of the Standard-Examiner's many online entertainment features.
The GO! website (go.standard.net) is an extension of our popular printed edition, but free of the deadline constrains of a weekly newspaper section. The website is updated daily with entertainment news both local and from around the country. It makes for an excellent companion to the printed product.
"We started the Out & About feature earlier this year when we realized that many of our staffers were attending events that we'd previewed with a story or listing in the GO! section -- and that the GO! website provided a perfect place to write about them afterward," said Features Editor Vanessa Zimmer. "That's something we hadn't been able to do before in a once-a-week print section."
The write-ups aren't intended to be full-blown reviews, but more of an informal look at entertainment events in the communities we cover.
We've also started sending photographers to concerts to post stand-alone slideshows on our StandardNet website. This allows those who attend the events to relive them through the images of the performers and the audience.
The Features staff is a diverse bunch with different entertainment interests. Music buff Linda East Brady attends a lot of concerts. Theater fan Mike Call attends a lot of plays. Becky Wright follows bluegrass music and attends art shows. Even Vanessa gets into the act.
"I've written a handful of Out & Abouts, too, but I'm more of an amateur utility player," she said. "I'm a regular at rendezvous and art festivals, and some concerts, mostly in the Americana vein."
Readers are invited to share their own comments on the posts as well.
"Whether they agree or disagree with our assessments, we'd like to offer lots of perspectives, and get a conversation going," Vanessa said.
CAMPAIGN COVERAGE: The Standard-Examiner has added the Washington Post, Bloomberg News, Slate, ScienceNOW, Kaiser Health and others to its wire service lineup. These news organizations are part of the Washington Post-Bloomberg News Service. Among other things, the wire service is known for its political coverage and commentaries.
With Mitt Romney locking up the Republican nomination, and the high interest locally in his candidacy, we thought the added coverage was warranted. Most of these stories will appear on our website, but some will also be in print as we count down to Election Day in November.
