BRIGHAM CITY -- Police here are circulating a photograph of a man they believe stole a $3,000 cold drink vending machine from next to an area business May 28.
"This is very unusual," said Brigham City Sgt. Kurt Fertig. "I don't ever remember that happening before."
Fertig said people have vandalized vending machines in their attempts to take money from them, but taking a whole machine is not something he's seen.
The machine was stolen from in front of K&H Fitness, 675 S. Main St., at 2:19 a.m. May 28. The theft was caught on surveillance video, which is where police obtained the photo of the man responsible.
Police say another person was driving a gold-colored van as part of the crime.
The video footage shows the van driving away with the vending machine loaded in the back.
The machine, which is black with blue graphics, is owned by Shep's Good Dog Vending.
Jerry Shepherd, owner of the vending company, said the theft represents a real hardship for him.
Shepherd said he started the vending company after he was laid off from his job in 2009, and he was hoping to make a living with the stolen machine and 20 others.
"From what police say, there's not much I can do unless someone will come forward and recognize him," Shepherd said.
Anyone who has any information about the man in the picture or the theft, is asked to call Brigham City Police at 435-734-6650.
Detective Chad Panter is the investigating officer.
