Wildcats add Berard, Kirk to hoops staff

OGDEN — Weber State men’s basketball coach Randy Rahe has announced two additions to the Wildcat staff. WSU has named Keith Berard as an assistant coach and Kadin Kirk has been named director of basketball operations.

As an assistant coach with the Wildcats, Berard will focus on all areas of coaching including assisting with academics, recruiting, player development and game preparations. He replaces Tim Gardner who spent the past six years with the Wildcat staff.

Berard comes to Weber State after spending the past five seasons as an assistant coach at Houston Baptist where he assisted the Huskies in recruiting, academics and coaching and served as the camp coordinator for the Husky basketball camps. Prior to his time at Houston Baptist, Berard spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Southern where he helped coach the team to the Southwestern Athletic Conference title in 2003 and a trip to the NCAA tournament.

Berard is no stranger to Utah having spent three seasons as an assistant coach at the College of Eastern Utah. He also spent one season as an assistant at Howard College. He played two seasons of basketball at Southern Utah from 1993-95, playing for head coach Bill Evans. Berard was a two-year starter for the Thunderbirds and helped lead the team to the America West Conference title in 1995. He earned First Team All-Conference honors and was named the Team MVP that season.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Southern Utah in 1996. He briefly played professional basketball in Switzerland in 1997.

A native of Houston, Berard and his wife Sabrina have two daughters, Katelyn Dion (9) and Khole Dion (5).

“We are really excited for Keith to join our staff and he will be a great addition for us,” Rahe said. “He is an extremely hard worker and fits in with our staff very well. He has a great deal of experience in recruiting and has been involved in every area of the program in places he has been. His experience will very valuable for our program.”

Kirk will take over the role of director of basketball operations for the Wildcats. He replaces Chris Gold who left Weber State to become an assistant coach at Snow College.

As director, Kirk will assist all areas of the Wildcat program including travel and scheduling. He spent the 2011-12 season with Weber State working as a video coordinator for the Wildcats.

Kirk is a native of Flagstaff, Ariz. He played two seasons of basketball at Texas Lutheran from 2005-07. Following his time with the Bulldogs he returned to Flagstaff and was a student assistant coach at Northern Arizona of the Big Sky Conference.

Kirk was also an assistant coach and the head freshman coach at Flagstaff High School from 2007-09 under his father James Kirk who was the head coach.

Kirk had an internship with Input Training Academy in Las Vegas and then spent the 2010-11 season as an assistant coach at Yuvapai College in Prescott, Ariz., before coming to Weber State.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in parks and recreation management with an emphasis in Spanish from NAU in 2010.

“We are pleased to move Kadin into the basketball operations director position,” Rahe said. “He did a terrific job in helping us last year and will continue to do so. He has a tremendous work ethic and will help our program in a lot of areas.”
