SALT LAKE CITY -- A teen has pleaded guilty in the deadly shooting of his Kearns High School classmate three years ago.

The 18-year-old Ricky Angilau was originally charged with murder, but took a deal Wednesday that had him pleading to a reduced manslaughter charge and eliminated all other charges against him.

Angilau was 16 at the time of the January 2009 shooting that left 16-year-old Esteban Saidi dead a few blocks from his high school. One witness told the court earlier that Angilau shot into the air because he was intimidated by gang members who had gathered to settle a dispute with a fight.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Angilau is set for sentencing Aug. 17, which is when he was originally scheduled to go to trial on the murder charge.
