OREM -- Ogden's big sticks lashed out with a vengeance in the seventh inning of Saturday's Pioneer League game with rival Orem, scoring six runs en route to an 8-5 win over the Owlz at Brown Ballpark.
Jeremy Rathjen's grand slam over the left-field wall was the final blow. His shot scored Eric Smith, Jesus Valdez and Devin Shines and put the Raptors ahead to stay.
Ogden (5-1) and Orem (1-4) will square off at 4 p.m. today to finish their series.
Manager Damon Berryhill's Raptors got two runs earlier in the seventh, when Jose Capellan tripled to center to open the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly. An error and three walks produced another run, then with two outs, Rathgen cleared the bases.
Valdez finished with three hits on the night. He tripled in the fifth, scoring when Shines singled him home.
Kazuki Nishijima picked up his third win of the season with a scoreless inning in relief of Ogden starter Derek Cone.
Cone allowed just three runs on five hits in five innings, striking out one.
Reliever Daniel Coulombe and Gregg Downing each allowed a run but kept Orem from getting any closer.
Orem reliever Garrett Baker took the loss.
The Raptors got on the board early, as leadoff batter Darnell Sweeney beat out an infield single, advanced on Malcolm Holland's sacrifice bunt, and came home to score on Smith's single right field.
The Owlz answered when Wendell Soto tripled home Drew Martinez, then scored on a ground out by Anthony Bemboom.
Rathjen threw out an Orem base-runner at home in the second. The Owlz scored solo runs in the fifth, seventh and ninth.
The Raptors and Owlz will play the final game of their four-game series today.
Matt Laney will pitch for Ogden against Orem's Jairo Diaz. The Raptors then return home for a three-game series with Idaho Falls, followed by a pair against Grand Junction.
