OGDEN — “Mad” Mike Arrant, winner of four of his last five MMA pro bouts, will headline Total Mayhem’s latest mixed martial arts fight card Saturday at Lindquist Field.
Billed as Raptors Rage in the Cage, the fighting starts at 7 p.m.
Arrant (9-8), an 170-pounder hailing from Clearfield, takes on experienced veteran Brandon Melendez (26-22) of Bountiful, who has UFC experience. In Arrant’s last fight, April 20 in Salt Lake City, he avenged a 2008 KO loss to Ogden’s Lee Doss, knocking out Doss in 8 seconds.
“Brandon Melendez is a heavy-handed southpaw striker and also has really good ground and pound. The advantages I have over him is I’m faster and a lot more well rounded as a fighter,” says the confident Arrant, who trains at Pit Elevated in Orem.
Pit Elevated has a strong reputation for developing MMA fighters who advance to the UFC, Bellator and other top MMA levels.
At Pit Elevated, Arrant is training two or three times a day and sparring 45 rounds a week. He’ll be prepared for Melendez, arguably his toughest fight.
“I train with really great fighters like Josh Burkman, Steve Siler, Ramsey Nijem, Court McGee, Brock Jardine, Rad Martinez and a lot of up and coming guys. Training with these guys give me the confidence to compete at the highest level,” added Arrant.
Saturday’s Total Mayhem card has several intriguing fights. One matches Ogden’s undefeated 180-pounder Shawn Conroy (3-0) versus another Junction City MMA pro, veteran Cole Rose (15-13). Local MMA fans are anticipating this match eagerly.
“This fight is definetly the biggest fight of my career. I’m putting my undefeated record up against a guy with a ton of experience. I look forward to seeing how my skills stack up. Win or lose, this is going to be a great fight,” said Conroy.
Another Ogden fighter on a good tear is Francisco Alcantara. The Ogden pro (5-6), has won five of his last six fights. He takes on West Valley City veteran, Mike Crisman (18-36-1) on the card. Alcantara has a pithy assessment of the match.
“I’m going to systematically break him (Crisman) down, collect my money and get ready for the next battle,” he said.
A semi-main event matches Top of Utahns Gabe Francis (5-3) versus Josh Buch (6-13). Another intriguing fight pits two veterans, Ogden’s Patrick Reeves against Steve Walser (5-4) of Richfield. Reeves (13-17) recently lost a tough kick boxing bout to Steve Sharpe in the most recent Total Mayhem card.
Also, Ogden’s Adam Butcher, a fifth-degree black belt, looks to go 2-0 when he fights Collin Clifford, also 1-0. Another Top of Utah veteran, Jarrett Kelton, fights Cristobal Perez. And Ogden prospect Justin Roberts (2-1) looks for a win against Kenneth Sparling.
Rounding out the ballpark card are Miles Welk versus Braeden Kilpak, Jeremy Shufelt versus Soloman Tauteole, Skyler Frasier versus Tuckett Crittenden, and Ryan Lund versus Steven K. Downey.
At the card will be local television personality Big Budah, who will MC. Also, MMA pro Kim Couture will be special guest commentator.
A fireworks show is scheduled after the card. Lindquist Field is located at 2330 Lincoln Ave. For more information, visit mmmtotalmayhem.com
