Fire burns Herriman foothills

HERRIMAN — Officials in Utah say a wildfire has burned several structures in the foothills around Herriman and forced evacuations.

Herriman city spokeswoman Nicole Martin says no injuries were immediately reported Friday in the Rose Crest Fire.

Martin says she can’t immediately confirm reports that a car fire sparked the blaze a little after 3 p.m. and that it rapidly spread across 30 acres.

Fire officials quickly ordered a nearly 10-square-mile area evacuated, including homes and businesses south and east of Rose Canyon Road. That’s outside and inside Herriman city limits.

A shelter is open at Herriman High School. Animals are being taken to the Salt Lake County Equestrian Center.

Martin says firefighters are being aided by two helicopters and two aerial tankers.
