Our View: Thumbs up, thumbs down

Thumbs up: To the NCAA Bowl Championship Committee, which finally implemented a four-team national championship playoff for college football starting in 2014. A larger playoff sans BCS influence would be far better, but at least this is a change.

Thumbs down: To unethical members of Congress. More than a dozen, including House Speaker John Boehner, changed their investments after meeting with major financial leaders during the financial meltdown in 2008. That behavior is both shameless and outrageous.

: To elements of our Utah Legislature who want to end the practice of unaffiliated voters being allowed to register for a party on primary day so they can vote, and then return to independent status. That’s a dumb idea. It stifles the democratic process.
: To a new way to be politically active. Federal election regulators have approved of allowing campaign donations via text messages. If one wants to be politically active, it’s best to stay with the times.
: To sloppy doctors, who are a deadly problem. According to the National Academies of Science’s Institute of Medicine, sloppy handwriting on prescriptions kills more than 7,000 patients a year.
: To the future of Ogden’s high adventure park. The park, north of the Ogden River and south of 18th Street, will have zip lines, climbing structures and other skill-building offerings.
