S. Utah landslide repair zone open holiday hours

CEDAR CITY — Transportation officials are opening a southern Utah landslide repair zone for extra hours to accommodate 4th of July travelers.

Route 14 in Cedar Canyon is currently open nights and weekends, but officials are allowing round-the-clock access to the area beginning 4 p.m. Tuesday and running through 7 a.m. Monday.

UTDOT District Engineer Jim McConnell says the extra days should make it easier for travelers to access cabins and the area’s national parks.

A major landslide last October destroyed more than a half-mile section of the Scenic Byway.

Workers are now hauling thousands of tons of dirt and rock from the upper slopes across the road and are battling the occasional rolling boulder.
