Farmington leaders not to dispute billboards

FARMINGTON -- City leaders are leery of jumping too quickly into the ongoing dispute between municipalities and billboard companies regarding the conversion of existing signs to electronic billboards.

The city’s planning commission reviewed a request to amend the sign ordinance prohibiting electronic signs at a recent meeting and decided to table the item, pending further study and review by city staff.

David Petersen, director of community development, said he will work with representatives from the various sign companies and the Utah League of Cities and Towns in addressing the issue.

The issue of converting existing billboards to electronic message boards is hardly confined to Farmington. A number of communities are tackling the issue after the dispute went unresolved at the legislative level during the past session.
