Lions QB Matthew Stafford boasts about a secret talent, passing lefty

DETROIT - Most people know Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford passed for 5,000 yards last season. But few people realize he also throws left-handed.

If you look closely at the NFL Play 60 commercial that debuted last fall, you can see Stafford flinging a pass left-handed in the background as linebacker Stephen Tulloch helps kids with a handoff drill.

Of course, backup quarterback Shaun Hill was only too quick to point out that it was only a miniball, since the Lions were playing with kids.

But Stafford said he can throw a regular football a good 15 yards. Sometimes Stafford fools around in practice and throws left-handed passes to coaches.

"Yeah, tight spiral occasionally, I would say," Hill said. "If he thinks he's consistent, I would disagree."

Asked for a self-evaluation on how well he can throw left-handed, Stafford said, "About as well as Kellen," as he looked over at rookie left-handed quarterback Kellen Moore sitting next to him. "No, I'm just kidding."

Hill said he also could throw lefty - and farther than 15 yards.

"Oh, yeah," he said. "I don't know. We'll have to see. One good throw, though, hurts. We'll have a competition at some point to see who's better left-handed."

Then it was Hill's turn to have a little good-natured fun with the rookie.

"I do know this, though," Hill said. "Kellen Moore is worse right-handed than we are left-handed."
